What Are Allergy Shots?

Allergy shot being administered, highlighting common reactions and concerns.

Allergy shots, medically known as subcutaneous immunotherapy, are a proven long-term treatment that reduces your body’s sensitivity to the allergens causing your symptoms.

After skin prick testing pinpoints your exact triggers, a personalised vial is prepared containing the specific allergens you reacted to. During treatment, you receive small injections of these allergens, starting at a very dilute dose and gradually building up in concentration over time.

Unlike allergy medications that only mask symptoms while they’re in your system, allergy shots work directly with your immune system to build real, lasting tolerance.

Over the course of treatment, your body slowly learns to stop overreacting to the things that once made you miserable, whether that’s mountain cedar, dust mites, mold, pet dander, or seasonal pollen.

Your seasonal or year-round allergy symptoms keep coming back despite medication

You’re tired of relying on antihistamines, nasal sprays, or eye drops every day

Your allergies interfere with sleep, work, exercise, or time outdoors

You’ve tested positive for environmental allergens like pollen, dust mites, mould, or pet dander

You’ve had serious reactions to insect stings and want long-term protection

You want a treatment that addresses the cause, not just the symptoms

You’re looking for a solution that could reduce or eliminate your need for daily allergy medications

What to Expect: The Allergy Shots Process

1

Initial Consultation

Our allergy specialist reviews your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle, and confirms your specific triggers through skin prick or blood testing.

2

Build Up Phase

You receive shots on a regular schedule, usually weekly, with the dose starting to dilute and gradually increasing as your immune system builds tolerance to your allergens.

3

 Maintenance Phase

Once you reach your target dose, your shots space out to about once a month, continuing for 3–5 years to lock in lasting tolerance.

4

Long-term Relief

Over time, your immune system stops overreacting to your triggers, so real-world exposures cause fewer and milder symptoms and you rely less on daily allergy medications.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does patch testing cost in San Antonio?

Cost depends on allergen panels needed and your insurance coverage. Most plans cover medically necessary patch testing. Call us at (210) 888-1297 before your appointment and our team will walk you through your costs clearly.

Is patch testing painful?

Patch testing is not painful, no needles, no scratching, no injections involved. You may feel mild itching at a test site during the 48 hours, which simply means your skin is responding to something worth investigating.

Is patch testing the same as a regular allergy test?

No, they test for completely different reactions. Standard testing identifies IgE-mediated allergies like hay fever. Patch testing identifies delayed hypersensitivity reactions responsible for contact dermatitis, the right test for recurring skin rashes from things you touch.

Can I shower or exercise during the 48 hours the patches are on?

Keep your back dry and avoid heavy sweating. No swimming or intense exercise during this period. Be careful when showering. Our team will give you specific practical guidance at your appointment so you know exactly what to do.

What if I test positive for something I use every day?

That is actually the best outcome, you have found the cause. Our team gives you a written list of ingredients to avoid and recommends specific alternatives. Most patients see real skin improvement within a few weeks of eliminating the trigger.
