Dr. Amanda Trott-Gregorio is a board-certified Allergist and Immunologist who has spent the past 10+ years in private practice in San Antonio, transforming the lives of countless patients with her warm, personable approach and genuine passion for resolving allergies.
A proud native of south Texas, she graduated from Texas A&M University in 2001 before earning her MD from St. George’s University School of Medicine, where she studied from 2003 to 2007. She went on to complete her residency at UTMB in Galveston from 2007 to 2010, followed by a prestigious Allergy and Immunology fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis from 2010 to 2012.

Pet allergy testing is designed to identify whether you are allergic to proteins found in animal dander, saliva, and urine. Despite the common belief, it is not the fur itself that triggers symptoms. The allergens are microscopic proteins that cling to skin flakes, hair, bedding, and surfaces throughout your home, which is why reactions can continue even when the animal is in another room.
Unlike patch testing, which checks for delayed skin reactions to substances that touch your skin, pet allergy testing looks for immediate, IgE-mediated reactions to airborne animal allergens.

Is pet allergy testing painful?
A skin prick test involves a quick, light scratch on the surface of the skin and is well tolerated by both adults and children. If a positive reaction occurs, you may feel mild itching at the test site, which settles soon after. A blood test involves a single, standard blood draw.
Do I have to give up my pet if I test positive?
Not necessarily. A confirmed pet allergy gives us the information we need to build a plan around your life. Many patients manage their symptoms well with a combination of environmental changes, medication, and allergy immunotherapy, and keep the pet they love.
Can I be allergic to a "hypoallergenic" breed?
Yes. No dog or cat breed is truly allergy-free. The proteins that cause reactions come from dander, saliva, and urine, which every animal produces. Some breeds may shed less, but they still carry the allergens that trigger symptoms.
How should I prepare for my test?
Most antihistamines need to be stopped for several days before a skin prick test, as they can interfere with the results. We’ll give you clear instructions when you book, and if stopping antihistamines isn’t possible for you, we can use a blood test instead.
When will I get my results?
Skin prick test results are read in the clinic within about 15 to 20 minutes, so you’ll discuss them with Dr. Trott at the same visit. Blood test results take a little longer and are reviewed with you at your follow-up.
