You’ve considered allergy shots, but the thought of weekly needles and clinic visits for months on end has held you back.
Allergy drops at Juniper Allergy in San Antonio offer a different path. Also known as sublingual immunotherapy, allergy drops gradually retrain your immune system to stop overreacting to your triggers, all from the comfort of your own home — no needles, no weekly clinic visits.

What Are Allergy Drops?
Allergy drops, medically known as sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT), are a long-term treatment that reduces your body’s sensitivity to the allergens causing your symptoms, delivered as small doses placed under the tongue instead of injected into the arm.
After skin prick or blood testing pinpoints your exact triggers, Dr. Trott-Gregorio prepares a personalized vial containing the specific allergens you reacted to. You take a few drops under your tongue each day at home, starting at a very dilute dose and gradually building up in concentration over time.
Unlike antihistamines that only mask symptoms while they’re in your system, allergy drops work directly with your immune system to build real, lasting tolerance. Over the course of treatment, your body slowly learns to stop overreacting to the things that once made you miserable, whether that’s mountain cedar, dust mites, mold, pet dander, or seasonal pollen.
Allergy Drops vs. Allergy Shots: What’s the Difference?
Both allergy drops and allergy shots retrain your immune system the same fundamental way — the delivery method is what differs.
Allergy Shots are injections given in our clinic under direct supervision, typically weekly during the build-up phase and monthly during maintenance. They have the longest safety track record and are often best for stinging insect venom allergies. |
Allergy Drops are taken under the tongue at home, every day. They offer unmatched convenience, no needles, and are especially well-suited for children, patients with busy schedules, and anyone who dislikes injections or can’t commit to weekly clinic visits. |
Dr. Trott-Gregorio will help you decide which option fits your allergens, your lifestyle, and your goals best.

What to Expect: The Allergy Drops Process
1
Initial Consultation
Our allergy specialist reviews your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle, and confirms your specific triggers through skin prick or blood testing.
2
Personalized Formula
Dr. Trott-Gregorio prepares a sublingual drop solution containing precise doses of the exact allergens you reacted to.
3
At-Home Treatment
You place a few drops under your tongue each day at home, with the dose gradually increasing as your immune system builds tolerance. No weekly clinic visits required.
4
Long-Term Relief
Over 3 to 5 years of consistent daily use, your immune system stops overreacting to your triggers, so real-world exposures cause fewer and milder symptoms.
Safety and Side Effects
Allergy drops have been used safely around the world for decades and are considered an excellent long-term option for most patients. Side effects are typically mild and short-lived, with the most common being minor itching or tingling in the mouth or throat that usually passes within a few minutes.
Severe reactions like anaphylaxis are extremely rare with sublingual immunotherapy — significantly rarer than with allergy shots. This is one of the main reasons allergy drops are often preferred for children and for patients who can’t be observed in-clinic after each dose. Dr. Trott-Gregorio will carefully monitor your progress and adjust your dosage as needed to keep your treatment both safe and effective.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do allergy drops cost in San Antonio?
Insurance coverage for sublingual immunotherapy varies and many plans do not cover allergy drops the way they cover allergy shots. Many patients find the out-of-pocket cost reasonable given the convenience of skipping clinic visits. Call us at (210) 888-1297 before your appointment and our team will walk you through your costs clearly.
Are allergy drops safe for children?
Yes, allergy drops are considered an excellent option for children who need long-term allergy treatment but can’t tolerate weekly needles or sit still for in-clinic observation. Dr. Trott-Gregorio will assess your child’s specific needs and allergens during the initial consultation.
How long does it take to see results from allergy drops?
Most patients notice meaningful improvement in their allergy symptoms within the first year of treatment. Full benefits build over the complete 3 to 5 year course, which is what gives you lasting tolerance rather than short-term relief.
Can allergy drops replace allergy shots?
For many patients, yes. Allergy drops offer a convenient, less invasive alternative that works through the same underlying mechanism as allergy shots. The right option depends on your allergens, your lifestyle, and your medical history, which Dr. Trott-Gregorio will walk through during your consultation.
Can I take allergy drops at home?
Yes, that’s one of the biggest advantages. After your initial consultation and first dose at the clinic, you’ll take your drops at home each day, following clear instructions from our team. There’s no need to return weekly for appointments
Are allergy drops safe during pregnancy?
If you’re already on allergy drops and become pregnant, it is generally safe to continue your current dose, but we don’t recommend starting a new course during pregnancy. Always check with Dr. Trott-Gregorio and your OB before making any changes to your treatment.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Occasionally missing a single dose is not usually a problem. If you miss several days in a row, let our team know, as we may need to adjust your dose temporarily. Consistency is key to getting the full benefit of sublingual immunotherapy.
Will I still need my allergy medications while on drops?
You can usually continue your antihistamines, nasal sprays, or eye drops while building up on allergy drops. Over time, as your tolerance improves, many patients find they need those medications far less often.
