Patch testing

This type of test is most often used in an Allergy clinic in order to determine a specific allergen that might be a causative agent of Contact Dermatitis. It is non-invasive, and involves the patient wearing a skin patch that contains numerous allergens (approximately 36) known to commonly cause Contact Dermatitis. The patch is worn on the back for ~2 days, and the patient must return to the office for removal of the test at that point and again after ~4 days (96 hours) in order to determine if there is a cutaneous reaction. It is best to shower before coming in to get the test placed, as the patch must stay dry while in place for the 1st 48 hours.
